The dress (rumored to weigh around 50 pounds) was custom made in 1951 by Dior for Soraya and made from 37 yards of silver lamé and tulle, encrusted with pearls, 6,000 diamonds, and 20,000 marabou feathers. Having not fully recovered from an illness, the heavy dress was nearly impossible for the exhausted Soraya to move in, prompting her fiancé, the Shah of Iran (and an aide) to take scissors to the dress and cut off 8 meters from the train. Despite the last minute alterations, the dress was still so large and heavy that she required 4 bridesmaids to help her get down the aisle.
